Cutting-edge technology

Although our focus is not on tech, but rather the powerful outcomes it can enable, this section aims to explain a bit more about each of the primary technologies we use.

Augmented reality

Augmented reality brings a digital element into your physical surroundings.

Imagine, for example, a mountain gorilla foraging for food in your living room, or a blue whale swimming above your garden!

Augmented reality

Augmented reality helps to create proximity where the real thing is not practical or possible. It also helps contextualize scale.

Traditionally, augmented reality lives on a portable screen, like a tablet or mobile phone. More recently, so-called "mixed reality headsets" like Meta Quests and Apple Vision Pro allow augmented reality to take place "hands free". The sensors on these devices allow you to move around the digital 3D element and even interact with it.

Virtual reality

Virtual reality is arguably the most immersive of all formats because it completely hides your surroundings, effectively teleporting you to another world.

Virtual reality is used when it's important to replicate being somewhere else physically. For example, donors witnessing frontline conservation efforts, or exploring an inaccessible cave on the other side of the world.

Virtual reality

There are 2 types of virtual reality:

Cinematic VR (or 360° video) involves using special omni-directional cameras to capture real-world places and animals, to be played back in a virtual reality headset from the perspective of where that camera was at the time of filming.

3D virtual reality, also watched back in a virtual reality headset, involves a purely digital spatial world, made up of elements usually made by our 3D team. The benefit of 3D virtual reality is that the viewer's perspective can change by moving through the digital world.

Holograms

Constantly evolving, holograms aim to make digital elements seem like they're right in front of you, using special displays.

Holograms are an exciting and relatively new immersive medium.

Imagine a tank in front of you that appears to have a turtle swimming inside it. When you lean left and right, you can see around the edges of its shell as it floats by. But it isn't actually there - it is a 3D recreation of a turtle.

Holograms

The possibility of interaction with these digital assets invokes an even deeper sense that they are really there.

Using clever programming and devices like hand trackers, we can make these assets aware of you. Imagine a school of fish in that same tank that quickly disperses when you try to touch them!
